Technology has been a lifelong interest of mine, but it's far from the only thing that defines me.
I'm Jason, and this website is a place to share some of the things I've worked on, learned, and enjoyed throughout my life; particularly within the IT world.
My professional background is in networking and IT, but my interests extend into software development, web design, gaming, writing, and plenty of other creative and technical pursuits.
From building websites when I was younger to working on new projects today, I've always enjoyed taking an idea and seeing what I can create with it.
Long before OdyNet became my home lab, there was a long trail of interests, experiments, jobs, games, and life experiences that slowly led me here.
My interest in technology really began with my first email account through Juno in 1996. When dial-up internet arrived in 1997, I moved to Yahoo! email, spent time in Yahoo! Chat rooms, and started learning that people could build their own websites.
After some rough early attempts at websites through GeoCities and Angelfire, I drifted more toward online communication. Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, and eventually Trillian became part of everyday life and gave me another way to stay connected with friends and family.
By 2001, I got back into web development through Microsoft FrontPage, which helped me understand more about how websites were structured. In 2002, I started playing Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon online, joined several gaming clans, and ended up designing websites for them — including the last one, which I still keep hosted for posterity.
In 2015, I started working for a pest control company. After about a year, I was promoted into the office as a Route Manager. Because it was a smaller organization, I noticed a lot of aging technology and offered to help modernize it. I led updates to their internet services, network hardware, voice systems through VoIP, and helped restructure how their CMS was delivered so it ran more efficiently for employees. That experience is what truly pushed me toward IT as a career.
After realizing how much I enjoyed that kind of work, I left the pest control company and enrolled at an HEI to study IT. During school, network engineering stood out to me more than anything else. It quickly became the career path that fascinated me the most.
I graduated in early March of 2018 and within two weeks found the company I still work for today. I originally expected to land somewhere in help desk, but they were looking for a Network Field Engineer instead. They trained me up, and I’ve been fortunate to grow into that role and beyond.
By late 2019, I had started what would become OdyNet — my home lab. It gave me a place to put what I was learning to use in a more personal, hands-on way, without the constraints of a business environment.
OdyNet really took off during the height of the COVID lockdowns. My company’s work was considered mission critical, so I returned to in-office work fairly quickly, but that period still gave my home lab real momentum. It became the place where I explored, built, tested, and learned constantly.
Today, OdyNet continues to grow as my ultimate DIY technology project. It includes everything from networking and virtualization to web hosting, application development, storage, and self-hosted services. In a lot of ways, it all starts and ends with technology.

My work involves designing, deploying, supporting, and troubleshooting network technology that people and organizations rely on. I also manage field services and the team members that also serve organizations to the same end.
Brace yourselves, the following list is lengthy. It takes a lot of different pairs of shoes to be a jack-of-all-trades.
This may sound boastful and I might be — a little — but the takeaways from this should be that I'm a hard worker and someone who thrives in a responsibilities-driven environment.

Technology has fascinated me ever since I got my first email account back in 1996 with Juno. These days, most of that curiosity ends up in my home lab, which has become my ultimate DIY project and one of the main ways I continue learning.
I got my start building websites with GeoCities and Angelfire, and to say they were rough would be generous. Somewhere between those early experiments and what I do now, web development became one of the most consistent threads in my life.
Gaming has been a big part of my life for years, from Ghost Recon clan days to long-running favorites like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Halo, Splinter Cell, and survival-style games. Some people unwind with television. I tend to unwind with a controller.
Writing is one of the more recent things I've started taking seriously. My wife and children love books, and over time I found myself pulled into that world too. I'm currently working on a novel and learning very quickly that continuity is no small task.
Anime and manga are a more personal interest of mine. It's not something I usually put front and center, but it has definitely become one of my favorite forms of entertainment. Consider this one of the quieter corners of who I am.
I enjoy movies and television the same way most people do: sometimes to discover something new, sometimes to revisit an old favorite, and sometimes just to relax and enjoy a good story.
From woodworking and renovations to SketchUp designs and 3D printing, I enjoy building things that solve real problems around the house. A lot of projects start as ideas, evolve with my wife's input, and eventually turn into something practical.
Long before this version of OdyNet, there were other websites, other ideas, and plenty of experiments.
I'm putting together an archive of some of the websites I developed when I was younger, including their original designs and the stories behind them.
